First of all, I have to say that I have been speaking in a southern accent for the past two days! Mostly to the kids, it would be embarassing if I talked to an adult that way--they might not be aware of my southern roots :)
I have to say that Miss Skeeter was the perfect height (5'11")--I really didn't appreciate the fact that everyone thought she was such a freak. I am 6' tall and it has never bothered me or anyone else (okay, except for the boys in 7th grade...) I wear high heels and sometimes that makes me 6'3". I may be an amazon woman, but that's no something I would want anyone to tell me... And how big were her feet? A size 9? Please! Hardly something that needs mentioning. Okay, I feel some relief over that now...
How I loved Minny! She made me laugh the whole way through the book. Abiliene was the sweetest lady ever and I cried at the end when she had to say good-bye to her baby girl! So sad!!! And one thing I will never understand. If these Mississippians were to racist to share a bathroom, then why would they let their maids raise their own children! So many ironies in prejudism. And I just have to say, that if anyone wanted to pay for me to have a maid, then I would gladly accept it! But when it comes to raising my children, that's something I want to do. And for that matter, I can handle the cooking too.
And did she really do that to the pie or did she just say she did?!?!?!?!?!
I know this world isn't perfect, but I am at least grateful to be living in a time where there is equality among people. At least I can say that for me and my friends and family, there is perfect acceptance and equality.
Oh, and one final thing. Can you believe Stuart? Hello! "Let's just break off the engagement and never talk to each other again because I haven't tried to get to know you well enough and I'm an idiot" Oh, brother! I would like to imagine that he either gets it together (again) or she finds someone without a political agenda who can appreciate her for who she is.
Okay, that's it for now. I've gotten all my thoughts off my chest. If you haven't read this one, I highly recommend it!

I can't believe you read it in 1 day! Amazing!
And, I know, if a person thought that someone carried all kinds of diseases, wouldn't they NOT want them to cook all the meals for themselves and their friends?
Thank you Lindsay, I will take the recommendation and read the book. I could hear your Southern accent as I read your words :)
Haha! I want to hear your southern accent please! Such a good read huh? I loved it. I thought it was very eye opening and I cried at the end too. Aibileen was such a sweet "mama" to her kids. She made me want to be better!
I loved this book..and ditto what Sinika said--she made me want to be better too. I'm glad you liked it.
Lindsay, I read this book in one day too when it first came out. I loved it so much and it's one that I will always remember.
I think that racism is just plain ignorance and tradition on the part of the racist....I also think that this book will help alot of us to understand a taste of what it might be like to be discrimminated against...and NEVER EVER do it to anyone else and teach our children the same.
I've thought about listening to the book on tape because I've heard it's really good with all of the southern accents and different voices for each character.
I am hoping that this will become a movie!
Oh wow, that would be cool if it became a movie. I've read it. My daughter cryed through the whole thing but I was like you. I got upset. It's plane stupidity to me for a person to use people that they look down on and complain about to take care to their children. Those people should have their reproductive organs frozen. ezbktr $f@m&z p*m?!!.
Loved the sence of bravery though.
big hugs
cindy
